Reviews Of Movie:

"Badlapur" is a crackling return to form for Director Sriram Raghvan after the debacle that was "Agent Vinod". Once again openly displaying his love for the neo-noir style with all the chutzpah, ambiguity, and deviousness that the genre demands, Raghvan serves up another devilishly delightful treat for noir fans to go along with his prior classics, "Ek Hasina Thi" and "Johnny Gaddar".

Aided by a crackerjack script (written by Raghvan himself along with Arijit Biswas) and stellar performances from Nawazuddin and Dhawan, Raghvan directs the hell out of "Badlapur". He infuses classic noir elements such as murky characters with ambiguous intents, unpredictable plot lines, and shocking twists into the proceedings – don't expect your conventional good vs. bad plot or heroes vs. villain; every character with the exception of Divya Dutta's Shobha is gray and willing to do whatever is necessary to realize their purpose. Another delectable noir reference is the dark, gritty, brooding canvas of the film, making each and every frame look like its revealing or saying something or nudging the actors towards their goals. Clearly cinematographer Anil Mehta was completely in sync with Raghvan's vision.

Violence is always one scene away in Badlapur, but it erupts only intermittently. Much of the drama unfolds in the minds of the characters and through the means of innocuous but fraught exchanges. It's a heavy, mindbender of a film, certainly not for those whose tastes are easily gratified by staple Bollywood masala fare of run- off-the-mill potboilers passing of under the guise of smart thrillers. The narrative is highly intense and intricate to a nerve- wracking point.

Kudos to Sriram Raghvan for being perhaps the only Director in mainstream world cinema today whose not only keeping the dying film noir/neo-noir genre afloat, but also showcasing the right sensibilities, proficiency, and understanding along with reverence for past classics to steadily build up and enviable repertoire of noir thrillers. Who knows, in coming years he might even be considered as an auteur of the genre.
